Civil War encampment, quilt show highlight big weekend at Renfrew

WAYNESBORO, Pa.  A big weekend full of family-friendly history and fun is planned at Renfrew Museum and Park with the 39th annual Civil War Encampment beginning on Friday, Aug. 9 and running through Sunday, Aug. 11.

Reenactors will start arriving to set up camp on Friday and campfires will be visible throughout the park. More than 300 reenactors are expected to make their home for the weekend on the 107-acre scenic Renfrew property. Guests are invited to walk through the camps and meet the reenactors who will portray a day in the life of a civil war soldier. The encampment activities are free to the public.

Walk back in time on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. as Renfrew celebrates the annual Royer Farmstead Day and welcomes the Buchanan Trail Quilters Quilt show. Farmstead Day is currently the only day of the year that all of Renfrew’s outbuildings are open to the public. Interpreters dressed in period clothing will be staged throughout the property sharing the Royer family story.

New this year, the Buchanan Quilters will offer A Community of Quilts Old and New Quilt Show. Quilters will be on hand to share the art of quilting with park guests and share their completed work with the public. The quilts will be on display in the Visitors Center, Museum House and Fahnestock House.

Admission for Farmstead Day tours will be adults $8, seniors $7, kids 7-18 $5, children under 6 and Renfrew members are free. Admission allows you to access all the buildings and the quilt show. The civil war encampment is free to the public.
