‘Honky Tonk Laundry’ brings ‘bootscootin’ show to Washington County Playhouse
Who knew the laundromat could be so much fun?
The Washington County Playhouse is transforming their stage into the “Wishy Washy Washateria” featuring soap, suds and cheatin’ hearts.
Their newest show, “Honky Tonk Laundry,” tells the story of Lana Mae Hopkins who hires Katie to help out in her laundromat. What happens next is a “bootscootin’ honky-tonk” with a touch of revenge against those that have “done ‘em wrong.”
“The story is about women navigating life, which is always easier to do when you have a good friend with you,” said Taylor Whidden Knapp, who plays Lana Mae Hopkins in the show.
The night features the music of Carrie Underwood, Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Sara Evans, Dixie Chicks, Chely Wright, Dolly Parton, Pam Tillis, Gretchen Wilson, Terri Clark, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline. The new musical comes from Roger Bean who is known for “The Marvelous Wonderettes” and “Life Could be a Dream.”
For Chelsea Bondarenko, who plays Katie, she finds the show especially fun because she knew Whidden Knapp before they started on this show together.
“I feel like we have chemistry already,” Bondarenko said. “I’ve never been in a show with just two cast members before and it’s been a really good time.”
The show kicks off on March 22 and runs through May 25 at The Washington County Playhouse.
Whidden Knapp, who is the general manager of a restaurant during the day, says that she enjoys getting to show the audience her love of performing.
“Theater is my passion so coming here and doing this is a way to find that freedom and I love getting to be a different person at night,” she said.
And she says that the show is a fun way for the audience to escape and laugh the night away.
“I think people are going to love this show. There are so many parts of this that can really capture so many personalities. There are a lot of great one-liners and the humor is awesome. No matter who you are you will find something that speaks to you,” Whidden Knapp said.
Because the songs are popular country hits, Bondarenko says she thinks that the audience is going to want to get out of their seats.
“I feel like they’re going to want to sing along and that’s really fun. I feel like we’re going to see them swaying in the audience,” Bondarenko said. “I can’t wait for the audience to see it because the script is so funny, there are so many funny jokes and the music because everyone’s going to know the songs.”
