Race to the New Year with "Glows" Fun Run
The Hagerstown YMCA is giving the community a chance to say goodbye to 2017 by running into the new year.
For the third year, the Y will host its There “Glows” 2017 Family Event & Fun Run on Sunday, Dec. 31. The event continues until the morning hours of New Year’s Day, Monday, Jan. 1.
Maria Rubeling, Hagerstown YMCA CEO, said the run is just a fun family event that encourages people to do something healthy to ring in the new year.
The event starts at 7 p.m. with Family Fun Night.
Rubeling said the Y will be open and people can participate in swimming, get on the bouncy house and the gym will be open.
“The whole Y will be open,” she said.
The event is open to anyone, not only YMCA members. The cost for the Fun Night is $3 per person or $10 for a family.
Then the evening will continue at 11:45 p.m. for the Fun Run to the outdoor track behind the Y. The race costs $15 until Saturday, Dec. 30, or $20 the day of the race. The price is in addition to the Fun Night.
“We glow up the track with glow sticks and glow balloons,” she said. “What happens is that they run or walk for 20 minutes and as they pass by each time, they collect an additional glow stick.”
Prizes will be given to those have completed the greatest number of laps. There also will be random prizes, but you must be present to win.
Rubeling said it’s something to behold seeing all the people wearing glow-in-the-dark bracelets as well as the track all lit up.
“We put water bottles with glow sticks, so there are about 300 bottles on the track so people don’t have to worry about getting lost,” she said.
She said it’s a great family friendly event, and said even her granddaughter when she was younger ran a couple laps.
“We’re trying to make a fun alternative New Year’s event, something fun that families can do together,” she said.
And, she said, the way the track is set up is really so that anyone can do it.
“Our track is about 1/3 of a mile, so three laps equal a mile,” she said. “So many people have a goal that I’m going walk at least three laps to get in a mile.”
Some competitive racers even come, she said, just to challenge themselves and other competitive runners for the event.
There “Glows” 2017 Family Event & Fun Run is a New Year’s Eve event after the Krumpe’s Donut Drop that’s still family-friendly.
And, she said, when midnight comes there will a countdown to ring in the New Year.
Rubeling said it’s just a fun event.
“I love that it’s unique for a couple of things. First, you can say, ‘I run into the next year,’” she said. “We advertise it’s the last run of 2017 and the first run of 2018.”
Most importantly, though, Rubeling said “you couldn’t start a new year any more healthier than running right into midnight.”
