The Bible tells of a star lighting the way for the Wise Men to see a newborn Jesus.
And in a way, Star Community staff hope that the light will lead the community to come for a visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, for the third annual Tree Lighting Celebration, at its location west of Hagerstown.
The faith-based Star Community, according to its website, offers 10 residences, a day program as well as an equestrian program.
The open-campus event offers tours throughout the equestrian center, therapeutic farm and facilities. The campus will be illuminated for the holiday season with a festival featuring seasonal attractions, refreshments and entertainment for children and families.
“This is truly a community-oriented event with activities for family members of all ages,” said Caroline Sayers, development director at Star Community Inc. “We appreciate the opportunity to work with the community and enjoy being able to celebrate and connect through this great, warm holiday experience.”
This free program has grown each year, welcoming 650 people last year to Star’s 145-acre campus on a farm-like setting near Cearfoss.
Special activities for children and families include horse-drawn sled rides and the unveiling of a new barrel car ride, a new permanent addition to the offerings at Star Community, according to Sayers.
Visitors can also look forward to heated tents with children’s activities and crafts. Free food and refreshments will be provided for guests including hot dogs, cookies, hot chocolate, hot cider and coffee. Indoor facilities will host food, face painting, and holiday music. Seating indoors and outdoors will be available.
“The lighting of the tree is one of the highlights of the night,” Sayers said.
One big tree will be lit, the star of the show, is outside. Additional trees indoors are decorated with handmade ornaments made by residents and day program participants. Entertainment includes performances by Star Community choir, reading of the Christmas story, and a live Nativity featuring a cast of Star Community therapeutic animals. Live holiday musical entertainment by local entertainers, including students from E. Russel Hicks music department, will also be featured.
“It really is the generosity of sponsors, donors and volunteers who make this event possible and keep it growing,” Sayers said.
