Healthy Summer Kids Camps
Warm summer days are finally in sight! As the days lengthen and another school year finishes, kids can look forward to getting outside and enjoying many Washington County area camps. Read on about camps that offer healthy doses of energizing outdoor fun, plenty of fresh air, friendship, and fond memories, resulting in lots of happy, healthy campers.
Multi-sports kids’ camps offer many diverse physical activities. The Hagerstown YMCA offers “Sports Unlimited” for kids six through 12, focusing on a different sport experience daily. Washington Co. Recreation Dept. hosts “Power Play,” a special-needs multi-sport program for those three through 12 in addition to day camps featuring athletics, swimming, skating, and field trips to other campsites, libraries, and creameries for those six to 12.
Does your child love adventure and thrills? Teens who are 13 to 16 years old can explore Whitetail’s “Epic Summer Adventure Camp” featuring kayaking, biking, hiking, and swimming or the “Adventure Camp,” which focuses on archery, air rifle shooting, fishing, kayaking, ropes course, and naturalist hiking for ages seven to 12. Antietam Rec offers “Antietam Olympics,” a whirlwind week of cutting-edge sports competition for adventurers seven to 13. Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) offers a co-ed multi-sport day camp for age eight to 13 and overnight sports camps for kids age 13 through 18 at Kutztown University (Pa.) Antietam Rec’s “Wilderness Survival” explores pioneer life, “Pirates of the Antietam” offers swashbuckling adventures, and “Wild West” features cowboy thrills for kids seven to 13. Antietam Rec’s “Outback” and “Mission Impossible” offer action-packed adventures for kids 14 and 15.
For kids who love playing outside, the Hagerstown YMCA offers week-long “Playground Camps” sponsored by the City of Hagerstown for six- to 12-year-olds at Hellane Park and Pangborn Park, including designated swim days at Potterfield Pool. The Y also offers several traditional camp options for kids five through 12 and Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program for those age 14 and 15.
Soccer camps are ideal for kids longing to be the next Rinaldo. The Hagerstown YMCA offers a soccer fundamentals camp for six to 14-year-olds. The Washington Co. Recreation Dept. holds a Summer High School Soccer League for boys and girls in grades nine to 12, soccer camp for kids six to eight, and “Tiny Tots Outside Soccer” for four- and five-year-olds. Car-Rey Pro Soccer Academy offers soccer strategy camps for kids six to nine, 10 to 12, and 13+ years plus advanced skills camp for those 12 and older.
Hoop-loving kids can enjoy several basketball camps. The Hagerstown YMCA hosts Goretti Basketball Camp focusing on skill development for kids age eight through 14. The Washington Co. Recreation Dept. offers Summer High School Age Boys and Girls Basketball Leagues at HCC’s ARCC. St. Maria Goretti offers boys’ and co-ed basketball camps for those grade two to nine and camp for girls grade four to nine. St. James School hosts Dan Prete Basketball Camp for kids six to 17.
Kids who like to spike, serve, set and bump can explore several volleyball camps. HCC hosts three groups of volleyball camps for girls in grade three to six, grade seven and eight, and grade nine to 12 and boys’ volleyball camp. The Hagerstown YMCA offers kids age eight to 12 a volleyball camp featuring fundamentals, player development and team building skills. Mid-Maryland Volleyball Camp is co-directed by Muhlenberg College’s (Pa.) head volleyball coach Alexa Keckler and Goretti’s Cokie Robertson at St. James School for boys and girls grade four to 12.
Water-loving kids can enjoy swim lessons through Washington Co. Recreation Dept. at Marty Snook Pool. Kids seven to 13 can beat the heat with Antietam Rec’s “Wet ‘n Wild,” “Splish Splash,” and “Super Soakin’ Safari” week-long water activities camps; “Water Mania” and “River Adventure” are offered for kids 14 and 15.
Kids into tumbling can explore 4-Star’s gymnastics camps for age three and up or The Little Gym’s day classes for kids age three to 12.
Tennis enthusiasts can check out Washington Co. Recreation Dept.’s co-ed lessons for kids five to 18 or the Summer Tennis League for age 13 to adult.
The Hagerstown YMCA offers a week-long Golf camp for kids age eight to 15. Teens can enjoy a unique spin on traditional golf through Washington Co. Recreation Dept.’s “Disc Golf Tournament.”
Outdoor sports fans can enjoy FCA’s camp featuring archery, fishing and shooting for kids eight to 13. Heritage Harvest Farm Horse Camp teaches kids age four and older riding fundamentals in either English or Western disciplines.
FCA also offers ice hockey camps for boys nine to 17 and advanced overnight training camp for boys 14 to 18 years and co-ed lacrosse camp for kids eight to 18.
