Totem Pole announces nominees for high school musical awards

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. — Totem Pole Playhouse at Caledonia State Park near Fayetteville recently announced 58 nominations in 11 categories for the sixth annual Totem Pole Playhouse Awards recognizing outstanding achievement in musical-theater production and performance by high school students in the counties surrounding the playhouse.

The awards focus solely on the performances of high school students, honoring their acting, singing, musical performances and stage crews.

Shippensburg (Pa.) Area Senior High School led all schools with a nomination in each of the 10 categories for its production of "Legally Blonde."

Three high schools tied with nine nominations each, including Gettysburg (Pa.) Area High School’s production of "Mamma Mia!," Biglerville (Pa.) High School’s staging of Stephen Sondheim’s "Sunday in the Park with George," and James Buchanan High School's presentation of "She Loves Me."

The remaining 13 nominations were shared between St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown, Forbes Road Junior/Senior High School in Fulton County, Pa., McConnellsburg (Pa.) High School and Waynesboro (Pa.) Area Senior High School.

All schools participating in the awards also are eligible for the best musical award named after Carl Schurr, the playhouse’s longtime producing artistic director.

The nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role include:

• Cali Cammarata, St. Maria Goretti High School

• Natalie Crawford, Shippensburg Area Senior High School

• Emily Palmerchuck, James Buchanan High School

• Heather Rippeon, Gettysburg Area High School

• Maria Torres, Biglerville High School

The nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role are:

• Nate Molloy, St. Maria Goretti High School

• Carter Tatara, Biglerville High School

• Jacob Troupe, James Buchanan High School

• Ashton Ulmer, Shippensburg Area Senior High School

• Maxwell Wolfe, Gettysburg Area Senior High School

The recipients of the Outstanding Performance by an Actress and Actor in a Leading Role also will receive a $1,000.00 William M. Moore Jr. college scholarship toward their future education.

Moore appeared on stage at Totem Pole as a young man and went on to teach for 43 years in Frederick County (Md.) Public Schools, where he served as the drama director for more than 25 years at Linganore High School.

The nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role are:

• Holden Lupey, Forbes Road Junior/Senior High School

• Mason Swankler, Waynesboro Area Senior High School

• Luke Szukalski, St. Maria Goretti High School

• Jeremy Telesky, Shippensburg Area Senior High School

The nominees for Outstanding Female Solo Vocal Performance include:

• Clara Geesaman, St. Maria Goretti High School

• Emily Palmerchuck, James Buchanan High School

• Heather Rippeon, Gettysburg Area High School

• Mady Rosenberry, Shippensburg Area Senior High School

• Maria Torres, Biglerville High School

The nominees for Outstanding Male Solo Vocal Performance include:

• Dean King, James Buchanan High School

• Holden Lupey, Forbes Road Junior/Senior High School

• Carter Tatara, Biglerville High School

• Ashton Ulmer, Shippensburg Area Senior High School

• Maxwell Wolfe, Gettysburg Area High School

The nominees for Outstanding Vocal Duet include:

• Heather Rippeon and Maxwell Wolfe, Gettysburg Area High School

• Ericka Schubel and Mason Swankler, Waynesboro Area Senior High School

• Maria Torres and Carter Tatara, Biglerville High School

The nominees for Outstanding Musical Chorus are:

• "Legally Blonde," Shippensburg Area Senior High School

• "Mamma Mia!," Gettysburg Area High School

• "She Loves Me," James Buchanan High School

• "Sunday in the Park with George," Biglerville High School

• "The Pajama Game," Waynesboro Area Senior High School

The nominees for Outstanding Musical Production Number include:

• "Sunday" from "Sunday in the Park with George," Biglerville High School

• "Twelve Days to Christmas" from "She Loves Me," James Buchanan High School

• "Under the Sea" from "The Little Mermaid," Forbes Road Junior/Senior High School

• "Voulez Vous" from "Mamma Mia!," Gettysburg Area Senior High School

• "Whipped into Shape" from "Legally Blonde," Shippensburg Area Senior High School

The nominees for Outstanding Stage Crew are:

• Biglerville High School

• Gettysburg Area High School

• James Buchanan High School

• McConnellsburg High School

• Shippensburg Area Senior High School

The awards ceremony will be on the Totem Pole stage. Rowan Joseph, Totem Pole’s producing artistic director, will host the awards ceremony.

The ceremony will be Sunday, May 19, at 5 p.m., and will include a presentation of a production number from each of the participating high schools, as well as performances from the nominated female and male soloists.

The awards ceremony also will be streamed live through the playhouse’s Facebook page, and will be available online for those unable to attend.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday at 10 a.m. They cost $10 for adults and $5 for students 18 and younger. Seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.
